“Correct. Would you rather have a QUEEN, or a ROOK, a KNIGHT and a PAWN?”

“That’s difficult. A ROOK is 5, a KNIGHT is 3 and a PAWN is 1. That makes 9 points which is the same as a QUEEN. So they’re the same?”

“Right again. I can tell you’re good at maths. Now listen carefully, both of you.

When you play your first games you’ll find it very hard to see everything that’s going on. The battlefield is a very big place and there’s always a lot happening. So in every game you’ll make lots of moves that lose points. If you want to be good enough to take on the Caïssan army you have to avoid making mistakes. It takes a few years for most kids to learn how to do this. But there is one way to learn more quickly.”

“What’s that?” asked Sam.

“It’s very simple. I want you to play some games against FISHY and KASPY. If you look on the right of your screen you’ll find the moves of the game, using the names of the squares. When you’ve finished the game press the PRINT GAME button and bring the moves in to show me. Every time you make a move that loses points you have to pay me. £100 for every point you lose. So if you lose a QUEEN for nothing you have to pay me £900 because the QUEEN is worth 9 points. If you lose a QUEEN but get a ROOK in return you make a loss of four points – that’s 9 take away 5 – so you have to pay me £400.”
